Wilh.Steinmann upright

Post by coftking@gmail.com »

Hi, have been given this upright for free for a nursing home, only have these photos of it, so can't check serial number...any idea of age, or quality? Is it steel or wooden frame?
Thanks for any info on it's suitability for casual entertainment to residents. Thanks, Deb.

Believe it to be made in East Germany and would guess it is about fifty years old so made 1970ish. Almost certainly will have an iron frame and have under dampers. Has the donor given you any info regarding if it keeps tune, that all the keys are working and it doesn't make any strange noises? It could be a reasonable piano but to make sure somebody needs to look at it even if that person just plays piano.

If you accept the piano please consider that it will need periodic tuning which comes with a cost.

As This piano is going in a public place, you will need safety casters for that type of piano. Unless you fix it to a wall so it can't be moved.

You may consider getting your local tuner to look at the piano before you pay for the cost of removals, as old East German Pianos can have some interesting faults.

Steinmann, Wilhelm is one of the top-quality products in the lower price range in the German Piano Union Leipzig. The two models on display are Canatate, a model that is extremely popular in terms of its shape (mahogany), and the Ballade model (light oak). The production range also includes a small grand piano, a Chippendale piano, model Adagio, and a piano in a classic case, model Favorit.

Wilhelm Steinmann was not a piano maker himself.

The instruments were sold by DEMUSA (the GDR's state-owned foreign trade company) until 1990. Steinmann instruments later came from China.
