Musician learning the piano

Post by Jas »

Hello. My name's Jas and I'm a PhD student at the LSE. I've been a bassist for nine years and learnt some piano and violin in my somewhat distant childhood.

Recently I've been thinking more and more about learning the piano. My main interest is jazz.

Needless to say, I have a few questions! The first concerns teaching; I'm not daunted about slogging away on my own, and probably have background to manage, but the occasional lesson - at least - would not go amiss, especially in regard to technique. So, can anyone recommend any teachers near SE22 (I live in East Dulwich). What's the going rate? Is it worth finding a piano-playing student and swapping piano lessons for economics/maths lessons? :)

Secondly, about the piano itself. I've read the FAQ, and most advice seems to favour buying new over second hand. The Yamaha C-series starts at well under GBP2k (online); is a 20-odd year-old U1 worth the extra thousand pounds, if I can afford it? What about the new Ps and Vs at a similar price?

Are there any good dealers with an SE postcode? What about central London?

Thanks for your help,
Jas

I always found Chappells of Bond St. pretty good. I think Nigel Hill is the man to speak to.
cheers

A music student will always be desperate for money; find one to teach you! It'd be a lot cheaper than an actual teacher, and they'd probably be more clued in on the latest music. Don't know about maths or economics lessons though; personally I'd run a mile screaming, although several teachers at Wycombe High would say I could have done with them... :(
