Hopkinson received a medal in 1851, and this is mentioned on pianos after the exhibition: It is not the date of the piano. Assuming that it doesn't mention the 1855 medal, it could be around 1853. Are there any numbers inside the top? I may be able to estimate the date from these.I can quote for printing a booklet on the Hopkinson firm. See also

Hi Bill

I am Karl's dad and the only information I can find on the piano is;

Great Exhibition Prize Medal Awarded 1851
J & J Hopkinson
Patent Piano Forte Manufacturers,
18 Soho Square, London

When you open the top, there is a number on the upper right corner 1151, this is repeated on the removable front panel.

I would appreciate any info you could give me such as "straight or overstrung, year etc if you have it

Thanks

Gordon

The Soho Square address puts it in the 1850s, and after the 1851 exhibition. They also received a medal in 1855, which is not mentioned, so it is presumably around 1852-54. It is unlikely to be overstrung, but I can't tell you anything without seeing inside it, that's the idea of the Reports page I mentioned.
