Chipped keys? Advice needed on repairs -maybe DIY????

Post by J&JHughes »

Hello

I have recently bought my first piano to learn with. Its only a cheapie and not in amazing condition. I have had it tuned today and it sounds pretty good to me now. The problem I have is that about 12 keys are chipped at the edges (the white ones) and some are sharp on my poor delicate fingers!

Is there any kind of DIY repair work I can do? My tuner said it would cost about GBP100-150 for a new set of keys and that's just out of my price range right now.

Julie,

The cheapest way to solve your problem, would be to carefully sand the edges of the chipped keys, rounding off any 'sharp bits'.
It's best to use a fairly high grit paper, 240 or above, and don't overdo the sanding!

Good luck,

T

If they are ivory then this product AcryliKey http://www.acrylikey.co.uk/ it works very well, if they are plastic then do as tuna suggested or use AcryliKey it will do plastic but you get a faint brown line on the joint

Thanks folks - the sanding sounds like the best way to go for now. The acrylic stuff site shows some great results but for DIY, it looks out of my league

Your advice is appreciated by my fingers!
