Bluthner overdamper touch

Post by scritchen »

I have an old Bluthner upright, straight strung, overdamped. I am generally happy with the damping and I do like the tone, but the touch is heavy and responsiveness is slow. What I would like to know is whther this heavy feel is a feature of the overdamper action, or whether the action can be regulated to give a more efficient touch?

Hmmmmm......!

You'll be lucky!

The only reason that a Bluthner Overdamper actually damps is that each one of its great big long damper heads is weighted with a veritable church roof full o'lead.

These massive structures have to be lifted out of the way by your delicate little dandies before they come crashing down onto the vibrating string thus stopping it surely in its tracks with a little bounce or two.....

It's almost balletic to watch. Take the front off!

That's exactly what I suspected - I can actually feel the lead weights as I play !
Thanks for explaining.
I think I might have to upgrade my piano to a modern underdamper !

Scritchen.
