Hello. We have the above piano with walnut venere,which is stamped 31677 underneath the lid when opened. Can any one please date the piano?

The number suggests 1880. See

Thanks for your email, I was unable to reply because of a permanent error on your account. The medals shown on the transfer demonstrate that the published numbers are wrong, because your excellent photo shows that #36117 must be after the 1885 Antwerp exhibition. This is not a rare instrument, it is typical of London cottage pianos, but it is one of the latest examples I know of.

Thank you for that. I appreciiate your knowledge on this subject but I am confused as to why the piano has the particular number stamped on it for a particular year, if it was indeed manufactured after 1885.

Would it be possible that it was practice for such awards and medals to be added later, for example, by agents selling the pianos, at the request of owners wishing to impress neighbours(!) or if the piano had not been sold upto that time?
