Technics PX30 digital piano

Post by barbara lambert »

My friend has offered to sell to me his Technics PX30 but we have no idea of the price I should pay. It is lightly used and is in excellent condition. It will not include the stool and no carriage is involved. Please can someone help? [/quote]

I'm not 100% sure of the spec, but if it's old it's probably 16 note polyphony and probably pales compared with even the entry level stuff of today.

For example, Yamaha have the P60 / YDP113, CLP-110 and CLP-115 all are exactly the same instrument packaged differently, the price new is around 400 to 600 quid [as are many other similarly spec'd models from other manufs] - and as many would advise that that the 32-polyphony on those models isn't enough and you'd be better with 64, it doesn't make an old 16-note polyphony instrument sound like it's worth much, irrespective of what other features it has or its condition or how much your friend paid for it.

Although an older higher spec'd model may have stuff on there that the new basic models don't - from the pov of their attempt to imitate the acoustic piano the newer tend to win.

That would make me reluctant to even buy it, and certainly not to pay much.

Look at it this way, there are 2 aspects to stage pianos - the action and the electronics / sound. "furniture" pianos you get some wood as well and perhaps some bigger speakers.

Consider those 2 or 3 aspects - electronics / soundwise it's probably next to worthless. The keyboard action, if very good - could potentially be used, if it has midi, to drive a piano module - so that's worth a bit [albeit brand new hammer weighted midi keyboards are only a few hundred quid and I've already mentioned above the prices of new digital pianos, so it's still not high] Regarded as a piece of furniture I'd suggest you'd be better with a nice set of drawers or a table or something :)

Perhaps as a sum of parts it could be worth more to someone, but I'd consider the money spent on it would be better spent towards something else [like a real acoustic or a better digital] YMMV though - if your friend is willing to sell it cheap, if you're buying it for someone who might not play it and just wants to dip their toe and see, or who just wants it for a specific purpose like doing exercises quietly or if you're on a budget and don't want to spend more, it might be ideal.

That said, Ebay tends to have [imho] an audience of people who see the magic keywords and buy old digital furniture pianos for better prices than my opinion might suggest.

If it's a case of you both being unsure and wishing to remain friends and get the best price - why not suggest that your friend puts it on Ebay and gives you the URL so you can bid if you want to? - That way, your friend sells the piano, the market will decide the value and, if you agree with the market it'll be you that wins, but personally I would keep looking :)

Thank you so much for your advice. I have not bought the piano as my friend wanted more money than I was prepared to pay. I am still looking but I have found some much better pianos for little money and am now prepared to pay more than I first thought.
