Yamaha U1 - can I make it less bright ?

Post by DavidG »

I have a 4 year old Yamaha U1 and it is just too bright in tone for my taste - quite 'in yer face' as they say. I have had a tuner do the professional bits like trying to soften the hammers but it has made little difference.

I wonder if there is anything of a more mechanical nature which I could try like using sound deadening materials inside the cabinet ?

Any suggestions very welcome as it is otherwise a lovely piano.

Thanks

First off all you can make a Yamaha very quite softening the hammers with
needles but that also kills the dynamics However, pull the piano away from
the wall you will see post at the back get some foam rubber and cut it to size
to fit sung between the posts, pack it down on to the sound board and that will
kill the volume

Thanks very much Barrie, I will give it a try & see what the reults are like. Much cheaper than swapping the piano !

The polystyrene slabs used for lagging tanks is quite good for that, if you can face trolling round a B&Q.How is the room furnished? Sofas, curtains and carpets all serve to absorb sound, and this current fad for plasticky wooden floors and blinds instead of curtains has brought me a host of customers suddenly whingeing about how loud the piano's got! Ditto the minimalist craze...speaking as a maximalist I can't understand it!
