T Hammer or Tuning Lever Poll?
Post by Colin Nicholson »
Received an unusual email asking some advice about tuning a Knight upright..
scenario.... pins very tight/ unable to be turned with BOTH hands / kept in a cold church.
uses a T hammer (and swears by it)....
Feel free to state the obvious.

T hammers were for a different age. The clue is in the "hammer" bit. Try knocking in a pin with it nowadays.
My dad, granddad and uncles all used T hammers up to the War. When new modern pianos started to creep in after. they all surreptitiously bought a lever.
What an advance the star head was

Our mission in life is to tune customers--not pianos.
Any fool can make a piano-- it needs a tuner to put the music in it

We had to use them at college if tuning an over damper. I still have a few in the workshop but would never dream to use one on a knight I would not like to tune a modern piano with my old Steinway leaver never mind a T
