Chappell "Royal Command"
Post by starfighter »
My parents just handed down our family piano to me. I've always thought this was a special piece. It appears to be an older Chappell Upright. Inside the backside of the piano it is stamped "Chappell London 67818" and there is a seal on the upper right corner that reads "By Royal Command of His Majesty, The King of Spain". Can anyone tell me when this was built & if the King of Spain seal has any added value or uniqueness? Thanks in advance for any replies!

1922. As for the Royal Spanish thing, they all had that!starfighter wrote: Can anyone tell me when this was built & if the King of Spain seal has any added value or uniqueness? Thanks in advance for any replies!
Should be a nice piano, and approaching the company's "Golden Era" which was around 1927. Their uprights and larger grands were real World-beaters, and stuffed anything made by Bechstein at that time.

Actually the number suggests 1922, and the published dates seem to be about right. Chappells made some wonderful pianos then, and their grands of that period are among the best. Advertisements in all kinds of trades like to shout about any royal connections, it is a quite common thing to see "By Royal Appointment" on all sorts of products, and it doesn't mean that particular piano has anything to do with royalty.
