New ivory?

Post by Colin Nicholson »

I just wondered if it was possible to get "new ivory" .... for a complete keyboard - 88 note?

I assessed a Steinway B the other day.... a couple of badly stained heads / one tail (C88) .... and 2 were chipped.
The customer informed me that they had been given a quote for new ivories....
If so, would this be illegal under the 1947 law?

Bill.... I remember you had some info about this.... I'll have a look, but might need some help :)

cheers

About three-quarters of the way down my Victorian page
http://www.pianohistory.info/victorian.html
just above the picture of the elephant, there are a couple of links to legal information, but it refers mainly to the fact that ivory which was worked before 1947 is less restricted than more modern items.

Surely the best advice on new ivory would be to contact the piano supplies houses?

Thanks Bill....

Not quite got the 'green light' yet.... they are happy with quote etc.... and the lady corrected herself by saying they were odd ivories. Pity.... 3 ivories stand out like a sore thumb.
Will contact supplies to see if they have almost grainless ivory heads & C88 tail. Got a few sets myself, but not that good quality.

I've got plenty ivories even some unused! But we've had them at least pre-War!
I've a whole set of keys that could help
Our mission in life is to tune customers--not pianos.

Any fool can make a piano-- it needs a tuner to put the music in it

Cheers Vernon.
Start the work on Monday.... and at some stage will look at the ivories. Very good condition, can't see the join easily on all of them. I'll get back to you. :)
