Correct Tuning Tool/s for Challen 988 ?
Post by alanworland »
Hi ALL,
I bought a second hand Challen 988 recently.
It has a Schwander Action.
I'm interested in having a go at tuning it myself.
I'm wondering what size "Piano Tuning {Hammer/Lever/Wrench}" I need.
I've come across one for sale that measures "0.65cm / 0.26inch",
but after trying to measure my piano, I sense that I may need one that is closer to 0.5cm.
Any advice would me much appreciated.
Thanks
Alan, from the Southern Highlands of NSW, Australia

G'Day Alan
Tuning levers do not usually have a socket measurement, and they quite vague - as the socket is star shape is tapered. On average a tuning pin starts at 6.5mm or 6.7mm and tapers down slightly.
The sockets are referred to as being small, medium or large - that's it. Start with medium first, then if too tight, try large.
If you have any problems, try to contact my colleague in Byron Bay NSW (Suffolk Park) - Phil Shayer.... google the Kaps piano website for contact details.... he may be able to help as he is a piano tuner & restorer..... mention my name if needed!

It may be a good idea to try and purchase a lever with detachable sockets (that screw on).... depending on if you are venturing into tuning more? Parkes in Sydney may be able to help, but could be trade only. If any problems, have a word with a piano tuner who may be able to order one for you.
You wont be able to go by the piano name or action makers name for the size of the tuning pins or tools, as these are made by a separate company.... e.g. Nippon. Sometimes its trial and error to find the right socket that fits.
Good luck with the tuning!
