The old Spencer numbers would suggest that this piano was made in 1888, but this is obviously not right, so unless there are other numbers inside, I can only suggest that this more modern "Spencer" was made by someone else. There may be dates inside, see

The numbers you have photographed [inside top lid facing the ceiling] is not the serial number - this is a cabinet/stock/parts number; and not recordable.
If you remove the front panel [and music rest combined] - you may see a set of numbers there - usually near & around the tuning pins.
Not very fashionable now these piano; both design look & colour - try Ebay..au start about $60 or less [no reserve] and see what happens.... the value will be depicted by the bids & how good your advert is, and how well the piano has been tuned & serviced....

Plenty of serial numbers of twentieth-century pianos are imprinted in just that way, and although the old Spencers were imprinted around the area of tuning pins, this is not possible with later iron frames. This piano looks more like fifties to me, see if there is a date inside, as I explained before.

Re: Spencer upright
Hello,
We got a funny old upright piano with our house. It is John Spencer and co (big scrolly writing - no other maker marks) and the number inside is 12471, with John Spencer and 2a stamped above. It has wooden pedals with brass tips.
It has just been very sucessfully tuned by Dave who comments that it appears that it hasn't been moved around much.
Our house was built in 1886 and I am intrigued to know whether the piano is of a similar age.
Any thoughts?
Kind regards
Deb

You can find some estimates of Spencer numbers about three-quarters of the down the page at
http://pianogen.org/numbers.html
and I would say it was around 1889, perhaps not quite as old as the house, but close.
There are also some brief comments on Spencer's pianos of the 1880s at http://pianogen.org/victorian.html
