Steinway Grand Decals

Post by Gmac1 »

Hi Folks,
I'm new to this forum and would value your advice... My Steinway model A grand is currently away being polished as the case was a bit of a state after having been tidied over some years ago. The instrument itself however was rebuilt more recently and is in very good condition.

The polisher is very experienced in doing pianos and was recommended to me by a number of technicians in central Scotland. The fallboard decal has been lost during stripping of the case and I'm wondering where I can obtain a new one. We've found a few available from the US but wondered if there was anything available closer to home?

Thanks Barrie,

Is it possible to buy such things if you are a non-trade customer?

Hi Graham

You could try this....

http://www.piercepianoatlas.com

I don't think they do original Steinway decals, but might be able to contact Steinway for you in New York or London. Some piano parts people are trade only. Pierce will sell to the public.... based in New Mexico, USA.

You might need to give the serial number - usually located on the bulkhead (front facing on the edge of the soundboard), behind the bass damper wires (need to remove action & keyboard to see it clearly) .... usually tucked away in the corner.

I would have thought the fallboard had brass inlaid lettering?

Hope that helps

Thanks Colin,

That's really helpful. The serial no indicates that it was made in 1904 and the case has been modernised at some point (straight legs and later style desk fitted) at this time the original lettering was obviously removed and a 1960's style decal fitted - which is a real shame.

I'll check all of these out and let you know how I get on.
