Wendl & Lung
Post by elliebea73 »
Hello
I am an expat living in France seeking to buy a piano.
So far, the ones I've gone to see are expensive and not in very good condition ...
However,I have come across a Wendl & Lung (2006).
The person is asking 2000 Euros for it, but my piano teacher tells me that after 5 years a piano in category C (which W&L is, I think?) loses 50% of its original value.
My question is: What, roughly, would the person have paid for this piano in 2006?

Why worry about the 2006 price? .... its the condition its in now which is important.
I would get a tuner to check it over if needed.

It's model 122
and the woman tells me it hasn't been tuned in two years as no one has played it in that time
It still has a guarantee which expires in 2016

I must agree with Colin.
Have you played the Wendl & Lung? If so, and you really like it, and it checks out ok with a tuner/tech not affiliated with the seller, go for it at the offered price or make an offer.
For info I believe it was the W&L 122 that was awarded the prestigious Diapason d'or award in 2007. So in general their pianos are well worth considering.
Can I assume you are located in Savoie from your 73 forum name?
You may wish to check on the Marche.fr website for a suitable piano. http://www.marche.fr/deposerannonce.php
Choose Musical Instruments from the l/h panel, type in 'Piano' from the Recherchez heading, add '78' to the Code Postal/Dept heading (if appropriate), and click on 'Chercher'.
That should give you some idea of available pianos in your location.
Another French site that occasionaly shows pianos is http://www.paruvendu.fr/bons-plans/
Good luck.

I was playing the piano in a zoo, when the elephant burst into tears. I said, "Don't you recognize the tune?" He replied, "No, I recognize the ivories!"

... Thanks New Age, but 73 refers to the year of l birth!
I'd still like to know, if anyone out there can tell me, what the lady might have paid for it new. Forewarned is forearmed after all.

122, made in 2006
She wants 2000 Euros, but I've read that after 5 years it loses 50%
The trouble is, I have know way of knowing what the original price would've been
It hasn't been tuned in two years because it hasn't been played in that time
Is that okay, do you think?

Re: Wendl & Lung
There is no rule that says a piano loses half its value in 5 years. If there was nobody would buy new pianos. Its supply and demand. Look about at other pianos , does it look good value and do you like it, is it in good condition and has it been looked after. If yes buy it....... if no dont.......easy.

You will never know the original price, unless the owner has kept the original "bill of sale" . I tuned a Danemann upright just before Xmas - the lady was in her 90's.... and just before I left, she pulled out the drawer the original invoice of about £2.1K - all stamped.... dated 1971 - and even an original type writer. That's how you find out the original price.... just wait for moments like that. The dates also matched the serial number and date stamp on the keyframe.

Re: Wendl & Lung
Honestly? £2100 for a Danemann Upright in 1971???? WOW! That's outrageous!
I'm sure I heard that was the price of a Steinway B at that time? Which also makes you wonder, if as Dan says £2100 is £25k, where Steinways found the extra £50,000 to put on the list price....

Hello
Back to the Wendl & Lung model 122, which I went to see yesterday and have now bought : )
It is to be delivered next week.
Could someone please tell me - as I've had conflicting advice - when is the best time to tune it.

After delivery - don't be palmed off with a tuning before delivery, it doesn't stay. I usually say give it a few weeks to acclimatise to your house's humidity/temperature.
I play for my own amazement...

sense reigns.
Our mission in life is to tune customers--not pianos.
Any fool can make a piano-- it needs a tuner to put the music in it

If you are still looking for another Piano or maybe other musical instruments, Vivastreet is one of the largest classified websites in France. https://www.vivastreet.com/achat-vente- ... musique/fr. I recently bought a flat in Antibes and bought quite a few items not to mention a nice Roland RP102 just to go with the decor.
