Where can I buy a key blank to fit my 1890s Bluthner?

Post by nickthedentist »

Hello,

I have an 1890s Bluthner upright whose lock I'd like to get working again, so that my toddler and his little friends don't mess around with the piano without adult supervision. It's certainly not a valuable piano, but has great sentimental value to me as I learned on it myself.

Taking the lock out took half a minute, and I'm good with my hands, so making a key operate the lock will not be too taxing for me.

But can anyone recommend a supplier of a suitable blank, please?

Many thanks,

Nick.

I got a blank piano key on Ebay a couple of months ago.... about £3.50 including next day delivery! .... keep your eyes open on there,.... I just had to refile it into a triangle shape to fit the lock - took about 15 mins.

just follow the info above - some pianos had/have a specially designed key for the make of the instrument and occasionally the initial letter name or emblem of the piano (eg 'B') is sometimes cast into the steel...... however, the part of the key that goes into the lock is the same for any old key; wardrobe, china cabinet etc.... just check the dimensions of the escutcheon before ordering, and if possible, remove it and take the whole lock & escutcheon to a locksmith.
