Bernart Piano

Post by MuranoArtGlass »

Hi Everyone

I purchased an Antique piano for my wife with a name inlaid in Brass under the keyboard cover which reads "BERNART". There is a serial number stamped inside the left hand panel of the piano which is 26026 and I presume this is an early date of manufacture. The carcass is veneered in what would either be BURR WALNUT over a Mahogany case with redded pilaster legs and voluted terminals. I have tried to upload pictures but without success. Any help with who actually made this would be appreciated as I know that some well known 19th century manufacturers used aliases

I look forward to your replies and advice

Best wishes

If you are Dean Cato, you have already asked me about this piano. The name is not a real maker, and there are a great many examples of German-sounding aliases in Australia and New Zealand. Without photos, we know nothing about a piano by its name.

Can you upload some images of the WHOLE piano here, or email them to me? The most likely problem is that the photos are too big, and need to be reduced to 50% or even 25%.

Any other clues will be hidden inside. If you ask your tuner to remove the action, it may be marked with the action makers' name and number, and I may be able to date this.

Dean,

I think it comes to a point in a piano's life when even its name & loads of numbers is in full view, but unknown, and even a whole host of numbers dont mean much at all, depending on the makers name - unless Bill can look them up. Despite many requests from previous posts to upload photos, we still get unusual emails saying "there is a number inside the left hand panel" ????.... eh? this is of course meaningless, and whatever you say in words should be displayed as photos.

There are some clear instructions how to download photos on here, but many choose the easy option of description by text only - so this can only really be answered with an approximate guide - no more. Try to imagine you are selling or asking for info about your house or car! .... pictures speak volumes!

Hope that helps
