Kawai AT 160 - need to know more!

I am considering buying an upright piano - Kawai AT 160 (serial number: 2215037) from a friend. Can't find any information on it. Help!

I could ask Joe Carroll or Mayomi for this enquiry - (sales rep & manager for Kawai) - is it an acoustic piano (with strings & hammers etc) - or I suspect it might be a digital piano? .... not heard of the model before.

Kawai AT160 is a silent acoustic piano (definitely saw the strings & hammers). In terms of size, it is similar in size to the K2 (H x W x D = 45 x 57 x 22 inches). The piano was bought from new in 2000. Are Joe Carroll or Mayomi contactable at Kawai UK, based at Milton Keynes? Thanks for your replies.

I'm confused, if it is silent, how can it be acoustic? "Acoustic" is about sound. Or are we talking about a practise keyboard that makes striking noises, but no notes? Strings produce sound, they are not silent.

At a time in history when there were suddenly lots of electric guitars, people started calling perfectly ordinary guitars "acoustic".

An "acoustic piano" is a PIANO!

Maybe the piano is interchangeable between silent & acoustic? Does the 'silent' piano activate when you press the middle pedal?...... thats the only thing I can think of.

Its 2 years since I was at Kawai in Milton Keynes. Joe is a rep mainly, and travels alot. Mayomi - she works in the office at Kawai, but things may have changed slightly. I think she mainly deals with the 'export' side of things, but they have a handful of p/t tuners & tech guys who may be able to help you.


I dont have their phone numbers regrettably, but if you contact Graham or Annette at GSG Pianos (who mainly stock Kawai) : www.gsgpianos.co.uk they may be able to help aswell. This is a local piano shop in my area. (I'm not trying to plug the shop by the way!)

The Kawai Anytime piano is a normal acoustic piano with a special gadget (box under keyboard) that can be switched on to activate the silent mode (where the digital technology takes over).
