Advice on piano makes
Post by DietCokeBabe »
Hi to anyone reading this.
I played piano and had a Schubert second hand upright for many years until my parents decided to move and I had to sell it. I never returned to playing, but the longing has never gone away (It's been over 12yrs since I played). Now 36yrs old, settled in my own house I have room for a piano...I have been looking and come accross 2 for sale in my area but having been out of the scene for so long I have no clue what is good and what to steer clear of. I was wondering if someone could give me some advice please? The two pianos I've seen are 'Cramer' and 'Merrington', they are both asking £200, the Cramer looks a bit scratched, the Merrington looks in better condition cosmetically. I loved my old piano and would like something similar with character, I like the old stuff!
Any help/advice really really appreciated.
Thanks.

No matter what the name is, no one here can guess the condition of any old 'blind' piano without having it inspected on-site. There may be tuning issues, loose pins, unstable tuning, cracks, overdamper problems - all sorts. Even photos won't tell.
Personally, I would save up a bit more money and look elsewhere - also check to make sure it is overstrung, under-damped, and a full iron frame FULLY protecting the wrest plank if possible.
If you are not sure about these terms, visit your local music/piano shop.
If you have tried out the pianos, and happy with the way they play - go for it.
