Kurzon piano?

Post by pianologic »

Hi all. Anyone heard of a KURZON piano in the UK? I have no history about it and find literally nothing about them online. It appear that it has #1 square tuning pins (or smaller). More interestingly (or worryingly!) is that the whole thing appears to have ben de-tuned by a couple of tones. I can only think of one possible reason for this and that's because it won't hold it's tuning so it's been de-tuned to stay in tune longer? Any advice appreciated.

Thank you.

The name is probably meaningless, I have never heard of a real maker with the name Kurzon, and without photos, I can't tell you anything about the piano. Is there any chance you can upload images here, or email them to me?

It may not have been deliberately detuned, it may have just been neglected and gone down in pitch gradually if it is an antique. The thin wrestpins suggest it might be. Tuning down in pitch is not normally a cure for an untuneable piano, but some tuners illogically refuse to raise antique pianos up to the normal pitch. Another possibility is that it has some structural problem such as splits or cracks, and detuning is to protect it from further damage. Only your tuner can tell you.

Thanks Bill. Nice to hear from someone nearby too (I am near Dereham!). Just got a Norwich based tuner out (Simon Cullum) to come in a few weeks to take a look. He mentioned that it was probably just rebadged piano.

Judging by the old pedals, I'd say this is not only renamed, but modernised. Any chance of a peek inside?

It looks straight-strung by the left hand key block?

Yes, I think it is genuine Edwardian fifties with complete new ends to the case.
