I'm flirting with the clarinet!

After all these years playing piano, I decided to look sideways at a solo instrument. The hardest part is getting your lips around the mouth piece and sustaining the pressure with your top teeth and, especially, your bottom lip.

I thought it'd be more worthwhile officially finishing off my Grade VIII - I can play at that level but stopped with the old dissertation - and then I dabbled with jumping straight to diploma and do my ATCL instead! It'd be more of a formality than learning anything right enough....

After 30 mins with the clarinet, though, I had mastered an octave pretty much!

I, like most schoolkids of Albion had a go at the recorder when I was at junior school. I always used to have this habit of shoving the mouthpiece too far into my cakehole, until I discovered the taste of wood which was what my recorder was made of. No health and safety in those days but it was the other extreme, the school had recorders that were unhygenigally shared out amongst all and sundry! I never did master the right way to put it into the mouth.

Mine was wood with a placky mouthpiece. only posh kids had ones that were all wood!

Well, we weren't posh! But I think we did it in a time before quality manufacturing became progressively cheapened by plastic items imported from abroad.
