Chickering cracked soundboard
Moderator: Subject Moved from History
I know little to none about pianos, but I acquired (for free)a very old Chickering. The sound board is cracked. The seller told me that is the way it is supposed to be. Of course that sounds odd...wondering if anyone knows anything about this.
Thanks.

Soundboard are not supposed to have cracks in them however, all soundboards will get cracks if they are placed in a to dry environment
Most cracks are not a problem and do now harm to the quality of the sound of the piano. However, when the cracks start to buzz then they are a problem, but most buzzing soundboard with cracks the buzzing tends to be coming form the belly bars that have come away from the soundboard.
