Yamaha Rubinstein serial number?

Post by malphonse »

Hi,

I need help with translating a serial number on my piano. It appears to be in Japanese. I've attached a picture.

I'd also like to find out its real brand. While "Rubinstein" is on the soundboard and the fall, the manufacturer's sticker says "Yamaha Piano".

Can someone shed some light on this?
Thanks!

Serial numbers are 9/10 always 'numbers', even for Japanese pianos - and not usually translated into Japanese (for whatever reason) - and dont usually occur on printed labels. On labels or decals, there are sometimes dates on this - but this doesnt refer to the serial number - but usually patent dates/ date of establishment/ exhibition dates etc....

The serial number (if its there) will be either decalled, printed in ink, stamped or punched onto the soundboard or at the top on the cast iron frame (gold). Numbers are usually in black - about 2cm in height.

Please refer to your earlier post on the piano history section - I have replied to this, explaining what to do.

However - it seems quite interesting! I will email a Japanese colleague of mine, who should be able to translate it for you.

Just received a reply on my email.... and the writing is translated thus:-

"Tsuruoka Piano (Limited private company)" [wording under Yamaha Piano]

"For the after sale service, feel free to call at.... " [wording above phone number]

I would never doubt my friend Cheng - the translation is correct if she says so!!.... however - never heard of "Tsuruoka" ?? The name here looks very similar to the founder of Yamaha - Tarakusu Yamaha, so maybe the label is a copy or counterfeit - or just a simple spelling error!

Anyway - puzzled solved!

The logo doesn't look like any logo Yamaha ever used.

Thanks for looking into this Colin! I had the label translated as well and got the same results.

I found a 6-digit hand-written number on the top right-hand corner of the soundboard, so I doubt that's it.
I've removed the panels and examined the front and sides to no avail. Are there any other areas I should check? I'm trying to avoid moving the piano to examine the back, but will do so if I don't have a choice.

As for the pictures, I'll try to add them to the previous post.

You can only upload one photo per post, unless you copy/paste on photoshop for example... like my Eavestaff photos. Just click on "post a reply" (not new post) - and upload your photo - front of the piano with top panel removed. Again.... anything you say really needs to be portrayed as a photo. So many newbies post wrong numbers or try to describe wording - but its not the same.

cheers
