The word "piano" is not enough here - although it looks like a grand piano?
Is it a grand piano or upright? square? ......?
Please download some more photos - the whole piano, not just the lid - click on a new post per photo.
Broadwood made several different kinds of piano, and each design had separate serial numbers (to date it).... we also prefer to see the numbers #84373 to verify if its the serial number or not. (The other post you sent starting with 1 *** is not a serial number - no records of these stamped numbers)
They also made:- Squares, cottage grands, semi grands, grands & full bicha, cabinet pianos and Boudoir grands etc

I'm sorry I was confused by what I thought were two separate enquiries. There is nothing strange about Howlett selling a Broadwod, putting his name on it, and the serial number suggests that it was made in 1894.

I have no answer for that question, they got through over a thousand serial numbers per year, but that does not prove that a thousand were made. It is a fairly ordinary Broadwood of the period.

As a rough guide (and may be contradicted) - Broadwood made around 6,600 upright pianos between the years 1884 - 1898.... there is no record of "how many per year" until after 1932.
1884 - #80001
1898 - #86600
Assuming they made this many pianos within 14 years, it is estimated they made around 471 pianos per year (between 1884 - 1898) - however, of course, they may have made more pianos one year, and less pianos another year. However there seemed to be an overlap of 5 years for the next set of serial numbers?
so from 1893 - serial number #86601 is recorded.... so its quite confusing!
So perhaps it would be best to say between 400 - 500 uprights made per year.... thats a rough guess.
