Munt Brothers ... Edwardian Upright
I have had the piano since the 1960's More as an item of furniture than a musical instrument.
I know very little about about pianos ... all I know about his piano is, when it was in playing-condition,it had a beautiful tone. I now have to part with the piano ... my question is ...
Is it likely to be of use to anyone, to repair and condition or is it only good for scrap.

Ask you local tech to check it over, will cost you a call out charge. Its probably only fit for burning but a tech would have to see it to give firm advice.MrsW wrote:is it only good for scrap.

Try ringing a piano shop (not a general music shop that just sells sheet music/ the odd musical instrument) - or try ringing a piano tuner - should be plenty in YP or online. They may ask you to send some photos of it first, inside & out, this depends on the mechanism inside & its general condition/ design/ colour etc. Some shops wont buy over-dampered pianos, and many fruitless visits are had by visiting various wrecks!!
If you think the piano is worth selling, then perhaps book a tuner to tune it first, it will sell much better. However, if its scrap - then some piano shops will take it away for you - but they will charge (in Yorkshire, around £50 - £60 - depending on location, and where the piano is located in your home). Ground floor is best & normal access - i.e. no more than 3 steps leading outside. The shop may buy it off you if its a suitable design, but if not, it will join many of the part-exchanges in their yard, then they will break it down & put it in a skip. You could also try the council, but they will charge aswell - and some councils may refuse it.
If all fails, pop it on Freecycle and see what happens (just google 'Freecycle')
Hope that helps.....

Hello Please don't skip your Munt piano. I have recently sold my munt piano on Ebay to a member of the Munt family. They have a wonderful history. You can also advertise it on preloved or gumtree for free. It didn't sell for a huge amount of money but it is now going to a new home and I'm sure will be much loved. x
I'm sure someone out their would take it and give it a new home. Clare x

Hello MrsW,
Sorry that this reply is 3 months late!
I am the person to whom Clair013 sold her Munt Piano. It was bought for a cousin who lives in Australia and is about to arrive by ship this weekend. I do hope that you found a good home for your piano. if you or anyonelse owing a Munt Piano would like to know more about Munt Bros I would be happy to provide you with some background about the business.
If you still have your piano you can go online at to find a piano expert who lives near to you. I am sure they will be happy to provide an assessment of your piano's condition and the likely costs of restoration. As Munt Bros made pianos between 1873 and 1935 most of these are likely to require substantial restoration work, as they are between 80 and 140 years old. Some of their pianos do make very attractive pieces of furniture.

Hello, I have a Munt Brothers Piano that was "manufactured espressly" for John W. Austin and is like a piece of furniture with intricate inlay. I have considered selling it if it was worth it. It is very pretty. Do you have any idea if it may be worth value? The wood is in great condition, but the internal instrumentation needs restoration.
