Scotchers, Birmingham

Post by Harpingon »

Hi

My grandfather owned Scotchers between the First and Second World Wars. The three sites were bombed out in the war when Birmingham City Council purchased the land off him. The big shop was on the land now occupied by Rackhams (House of Fraser) on Corporation Street. Strangely enough I had my music lessons on a Scotchers piano at school a good 40 years after the shops closed.

Not sure if this is of any interest, but I recently bought a Collard & Collard piano in London (I'm told it may be 150 years old) and inside there is a pencil inscription B Scotcher 1926 1927. I guess it may have been tuned by this person back then.
