Robertson & Co. London.N.

Post by e page »

I have a Robertson and Co. london. London.N. straight strung birdcage action 3/4 iron frame upright piano with 85 keys and candlebras. I am curious whether its from the nineteenth or early twethieth century. It has 2752 written in pencil on the interior also stamped into a vertical wood beam, the first two keys have 950 stamped into them. Also the action has No.259 stamped twice and barely legible 'columbia no. 3405'. I know robertson and co may only be an alias but any info would be interesting. thanks Eamon.

The address London N would have had a suffix number added in 1917, but the old transfers could still have been in use for some time. Most of the piano-related Robertsons were in Scotland, but in 1922, Robertson & Co. were listed among the guarantors for research work at the Northern Polytechnic, which taught tuning. Coincidentally, Columbia records were just beginning then. I have no references to Columbia in pianos.

85 notes was still the norm in the sixties. 3/4 frames were still in limited use in the twenties, when the sconces (candleholders) were coming to an end. Can you post some photos of the whole piano? Have a look at...

I find it strangely difficult if I can't get a clear impression of the whole piano, but it is probably shortly before 1910. The action looks German, so pre-1914, if the number on it had two more digits, (there seems to be a suggestion of -1) it might suggest 1909, but "Columbia" means nothing to me, although it seems to be attached to the action number.
