YAMAHA T121
I am a grade 3 student, I plan to buy a piano. A friend recommended to buy a new YAMAHA T121, I do not know too much about piano, can anyone give some advice on this piano?
Another option is to buy a second hand piano YAMAHA SU118(1984), $3000, it has nice sound, very bright, loud, I even worry about too loud for a small room. It tuned 18 months ago, but holds quite well.
Thank you.

I've not played on a T series Yamaha but heard they are ok. Rumour they use lesser quality hammer felt and not as strongly built at other pianos.
I would check out the 1984 Yamaha for definite as its nearly 30 years old & find out if it has been refurbished or not (ie new hammers). Get a piano technician to tune it and assess it.
Again, some posts here are from a result of "viewed on-line" new members - and often is the case just the looks & price is appealing. I think the T121 is quite a short piano (48"?) ,,,, so the bass may not be brilliant.
I would also widen your search if its a first piano. Have a look at the Yamaha U1 & U3 and Kawai K2 and K3.
However if you are grade 3 standard (ish)...... with regular six-monthly tunings and servicing every 2 years, any of those pianos should take you to Grade 8 & beyond.
Also check out warranty - minimum of 5 years for 2nd hand, and 10 years for new.
.... and do they include a after-delivery free tuning?
Dont know what $3K means? is that USA or Oz? need to convert to UK pound.
If Mark sees this, he is one of the experts on Yamaha.
Hope that helps

The "T",range of piano was manufactured in Thomaston, Georgia USA I beleave its gone like the UK plant that made the Yamaha 121 here.
Like the UK one in the main Yamaha parts were used Bass string my have been made in the USA and they were voiced very bright get a tuner to look at it first. As Colin as pointed there are other makes out there. There are some good second-hand bargains to be had in the US at the moment, sadly due some poor bugger having to sell to pay the rent . Not that bad in the UK yet but...

Colin, thank you for your advice, it is very helpful. The old piano is from a resident, so he does not provide warranty. I am in Australia, it is Australian Dollars, equals UK pound 1939.
Barrie, thank you, hopefully I can have a good bargains...
