Brinsmead & Sons Piano

I have just been given a Brinsmead and Sons upright piano and am wondering about its age. The only numbering i can find is stamped on all the parts of the piano and is 40240. can anyone help me with dating this piano.

There are various sets of numbers (and duplicated numbers) inside a piano, some of them are just stock/ part numbers that dont relate to anything, and the serial number (usually around 4-6 digits) will give us an indication of its age. If the number #40240 is the serial number, then it suggests a period prior to 1895; but there is no way of telling unless we can see an image/photo of the serial number, and perhaps the piano and its internal mechanism.... so just a guess at the moment.

If you could send a photo or 2, that would help. The serial number is usually quite unique in its font size & design, and is either punched/ stamped into wood (wrest plank/ side panel or soundboard) or sometimes applied as a decal, or added to a raised plinth of wood.

If you happened to just lift the top lid, and see some numbers at the top of the side panel (facing the ceiling) .... this is not usually the serial number, but a stock number. You may need to completely remove the front panel (one with music rest) to view the serial number.

Thankyou for your help... these are some pics...i cant find any other numbering that looks like it could be a serial except for a 3 digit number at the top facing the ceiling in left hand side. the 42040 is stampen on a number of places.

This is clearly a serial number, imprinted in a perfectly normal position and form, and repeated in several places. According to the published information, this piano would have been made around 1896, and this seems reasonable, judging by the photos.

Nice 1.... and one happily dated piano!
Its nice when Bill puts the icing on the cake.
Always better to see a few photos just to make sure.

(If its a tape action - jst be careful putting the mechanism back in, if any of those red straps are broken .... EEK! .... get someone to put it back in for you. )
