Bayliss from Brinsmeads

Post by Bebe »

I'm in TX and a friend just posted a picture of a Brinsmead piano. It actually said:
Walter Bayliss
from John Brinsmead & Sons
London. N.W.

I've not been able to locate any information on this particular Brinsmead at all. Is there anything you might tell me, please? It's a beautiful old instrument!

Thank you!

Is that Texas USA??

There is no information available for any particular or privately owned piano.... this information is only at the will of a previous owner. History of Brinsmead dates back to approx. 1836, and in my book, there is very little info.....

JOHN BRINSMEAD & SONS: Est 1836. 7, Cavendish Square, London
Purchased by Kemble in 1967.
Serial numbers list from 1860 - 1980

There may be a serial number inside the piano - near the tuning pins, but this number should be verified with us first by a photo to tell if its a serial number or not, as many new members reel off a whole host of irrelevant numbers/ letters/ symbols that can't tell us anything.

A photo or 2 would help, but as I said, this wouldnt necessarily give you info on this piano.... just Brinsmead in general. Nor can we give valuations.

Haven't a clue who Walter Bayliss is, could have been a retailer's name.... often a small sticker or sometimes gold lettering applied below the name of the piano. Its like selling a Steinway piano in "Brick a Brack" shop in Liverpool!!.... the trade/shop name only sell the piano, they dont make them or in no way connected to the piano's name. The manufacturers name Brinsmead is right.... leave it at that, and forget this Walter chappy!

Bill may be able to enlighten you further......

Thanks

The Walter Bayliss is the first line in larger, gold letters. After that comes the maker info. Much like this:

Walter Bayliss
FROM JOHN BRINSMEAD & SONS
LONDON. N.W.

I'm actually talking with the owner now, so this might be a bit choppy....

And yes, TX, USA! Just north of Dallas, to be specific!

I'm going to have Robby join the board so he can post the 2 pictures he has. I'm horrible at stuff like this (even tho I'm an editor for gaming fan sites! hehe) We're just wanting to find out more information about the piano. Not pricing, really. We can dig that type of thing up if we wanted to, I'm sure.

Thanks so much!

Not a Brinsmead piano

Post by Bill Kibby »

The maker is Bayliss, the "From" means that he was trained at the Brinsmead factory. Following the Brinsmead name is going to be a dead end for your research. Can you post some photos, or email them to me? Have a look at the top two items on this page. Records at the Piano History Centre do not show Bayliss 1886-1911.
