Blind tuner question

Post by Johnkie »

Over the years I've worked alongside fellow tuners that have been blind. Every one that I had ever met was a top-notch master of his craft. They all trained either at a workshop or college for the blind.

With the rise of popularity and increased use of Electronic Tuning Devices ... I wonder if there has been any such device made for Blind tuners, that has been modified specifically for their use.

Another Question : How do our non-sighted brothers (and sisters) manage to read and answer posts on this forum ..... Do you perhaps use something like "Dragon naturally speaking" ?

I remember very well the time of regular power cuts, back in the 70's at the time of the Miners Strike when I, being sighted, struggled to tune without light while all the blind tuners worked merrily on without a hint of anything being at all different.

A tuner visited me a few weeks ago.
He was sent to... erm... Libya or something like that to found a piano tuning school specifically for blind people to help them escape their poverty.

Nice topic :)

Sanderson did bring out a vibrating gadget to fit on the leaver that was connected to the ETD but not much success, the AcuforkII has notches on the scale for Blind users I know of a few blind tuners who use them but they are only used to set the pitch

They use Hall or JAWS if they are lucky they use a Braille display providing they can read Braille. JAWS is a screen reader about £900.00 to buy it reads what is on the screen. Blind users don't use a mouse they use Keyboard short cuts, most Blind computer users don't like Forums to many keystrokes to get around. We use to have a hidden forum on here for ABPT members but we moved to a list serve as most found it hard work the one with no Braille display.

A good 80 cell Braille display is about £8K The wife has JAWS as home and JAWS and a 80 cell Braille display at work. She works for TV licensing she has the client in one ear JAWS is the other one. She moves her hands from the keyboard to the Braille display or one on each Some times she is listing to the client, the computer reading and typing all at the same time when she is taking CC details for payment , now that's multi tasking.

All good fun
