Can anyone help? My uncle recently passed away and has left me a grand piano . I would love to find out more about it. All i know is my grandfather bought this circa 1950s from a dealer in Harpenden herts. It has Th.Manne & co on the front. any ideas anyone?

Re: piano makers
Sorry Sharwee - Having looked the name up, I can find no trace of this make. It may be the name of the supplier rather than the maker. It might help if you could take a few digital photos and post them on this site for us to scan. The best bet is to ask a reputable tuner / technician to have a look at it though, I'm sure if you let us know what area you live ... someone here could point you to such a person. You say he bought it circa 1950 .... That doesn't help much either I'm afraid - it may well have been years old when he bought it.

There is a "Theo Mann & Co" (spelt differently, but probably the same name) - but very little info. This is what it says....
MANN, THEO & CO. of Bielfeld, Germany - est. 1836
There was also a Mann & Co (without the Theo) - same details as above.
Grand pianos are also difficult to date accurately, but if you send a photo of the piano - including the design of legs, and a photo of the internal mechanism (with music rest removed) - looking down through the strings - someone may be able to give a rough date. A serial number in this case is of no use, as the book haven't any submitted. Sometimes Bill can give a date by the action number, but you need to know how to remove the action safely - best contact a piano tuner.
Hope that helps....

(To Johnkie)...
Just wondered what part of the 'toon' you are from??
I'm a Morpeth lad originally - moved to Yorkshire in 1989.
Are you a piano tuner/ teacher?
Cheers
Colin

Banded him and his Indian IP address but they will just use an anonymizer
