Post by John Schofield »

Does anyone have information on John William Schofield - Pianoforte Manufacturer, repairer, tuner, teacher - Contempory of Elgar and Henry Wood. Lived in Ilderton Road, London SE in 1850/1920. Also had connections in Manchester. Conducted massed chiors at Crystal Palace. Tuned upright forte pianos by playing the keys with his toes when turning string pin - how else??

If he was a piano manufacturer in his own right, it is surprising that he doesn't appear in any of my London or UK lists in that long period. However, there was a J.W. Schofield in London in 1928. What do you mean by a "forte piano"? And why would he use his toes, did he only have one arm?

It was about 1928 that he died.I have an invoice for one of his piano sales showing also an address in Manchester. He imported frames from Germany. His business was continued by his sons. One later left and ran a showroom in the City Road, London for the Montague piano family. I have seen one of John William Schofield pianos in Southport, Lancashire.
I met Montague senior when I was a child in the 40's.
