Knight piano numbers

I noticed one of your members asked about his Knight piano. I too have one exactly the way he described his. Curved legs, a grille above the pedals and has the imbuia ball and claw. Its is very deco-ish as he well describes it and has a stunning sound.
It was of great interest to me that he also mentioned the fact that it says KNIGHT SOUTH AFRICA. It was suggested that it was not in fact made in SA, but in England. Does this mean that it may have been assembled in SA? Why would it appear on the paino at all?

Also, I would be most grateful if someone could tell me the age of my piano. The number on the steel frame is M16 and the serial number is; 722036.

IF I remember right Detmann piano SA Made a few Knights under licence in the 70s we use to import Detmann piano from SA in the 80s they were very well made

Also the serial number i 722036. is not a Knight number, Knights numbers ended 67350 in the 80s They were taken over by Bentleys

Seems I was given an incorrect serial number for my Knight piano so now would like to ask if this serial number would tell me the age of the piano??? 722058

According to my information, they were already up to #62600 in 1979, but from what Barrie says, your number seems to be impossible for an original Knioght, perhaps it was a Betley. Far too much emphasis is placed on the validity of serial numbers in dating pianos, principally because most pianos have several numbers inside. Have a look at my Datemarks and Numbers pages...

Please let me throw one more number at you (hopefully a serial number) of the Knight SA upright piano which still remains somewhat of a mystery.

Please could you see if the number 22058 exists on your list.

Did Knight not use the name Autobach in South Africa as i met a fellow a few years back orginally from Edinburgh who ran the factory in the seventies.

#22058 should be about 1958, but if you know how, have a look under the bottom keys for a date. That other name was OTTO BACH.
