Me again and my purchase of Kawai GM10 !!

Post by quinie »

Hi there - I've been umming and ahhing about getting a new GM10 and recently missed a second hand one which I was really interested in which was a shame!

Anyway, I went to have another look at the GM10 at the weekend in the showroom and still really liked it but there was a GE20 next to it which I had a go on and absoltely loved.

The GM10 is £7,500 and the GE20 is £9,500 - £9,500 would usually be WAY out of my price range but hubby has offered to help out and this puts it just in reach.

My question is - is it really worth the extra difference? To me, it felt like £2K difference but I'm not really a professional at all and just know what I like if you know what I mean?

Sorry to keep hassling you with these questions but it's such a big decision!!! I've never spent so much money on anything in my entire life and really want to make an informed decision!

Thanks so much in advance!

If you have played it and are willing to pay the £2k extra then its worth £2k extra. If you dont think its £2k better go for the lower cost one.

Thanks for the reply!

I suppose you're right and it is my money - I'm just a bit scared - never spent so much money on anything (not a car or anything) before in my life - except my mortgage - but I am so old that was only a bit more!!! LOL!

The GM10 is the cheaper Indonesian-made one isn't it?
The GE20 is the higher quality Japanese made one I think. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

I've read that the GE20 also has the carbon fibre action parts so you might want to read up on them but they should be fine and of course in theory they should be able to withstand decades of playing and humidity/temperature fluctuations (or drink spills) better than the traditional wooden parts. But then again, with new technology you are taking a risk and the carbon fibre parts can often SCARE customers instead of reassuring them. Many people trust wood and are wary of new things like carbon fibre.

However, if I were in your shoes I'd grab the more expensive one because you enjoyed playing it more. Don't look back, ignore the GM10 and embrace the GE20 and tell all your friends that it has carbon fibre action parts, they'll be very impressed... and I'll be very jealous! Image

Keep us posted... and try and get that price down. Have a ring around, see what you can do.
After a quick google, here is a list of people you could phone to see who wants your custom the most and who gives you the best impression over the phone:

http://www.petersmithpianos.co.uk/more/on/details/00098

http://www.sheargoldmusic.co.uk/p-84-ka ... price.aspx
http://www.gsgpianos.co.uk/kawai-pianos ... e=11590.00

That's 9 phone calls you might want to make to see who is most keen to serve you. Don't let the distance put you off, be prepared to travel to check the piano out before buying. Or if you order over the phone you are covered by the 14 day "distance selling" act which entitles you to a full refund within 14 days of delivery. You are even entitled to get your delivery fee back.

Either way, keep us posted

Barrie,
Dont think it matters what Yamaha says. The dealer agreement says no ebay but country wide have dumped stock on there for 4-5 months now.
