Age of my Bechstein piano

Post by xanthianna »

I would be grateful if you could help me find the age of my Bechstein upright piano. The details that i have available are the number 1844 that I have found edged on the inside of the upper door and the serial number of the action which is 150582*800 DRP No2701 Jean Schwander & Herrburger Paris. Pictures of the above details are available if it is necessary.

The number #1844 suggests around 1865, but this may be a cabinet number. We would need to see these numbers (photo) to verify if it is the actual serial number or not. Bechsteins usually put their serial numbers inside the piano, near the tuning pins, or on the soundboard, so you will need to completely remove the front 'music' panel to see inside. A photo of the inside will also help.
Bill may be able to translate those long lists of numbers on the action, but I think some of them may not readily tell you the date.

Hope that's useful....

This is purely subjective but it seems around 1900. Tied action, obviously somebody has " modernised" the top door.
Our mission in life is to tune customers--not pianos.

Any fool can make a piano-- it needs a tuner to put the music in it

If 150582 is the Schwander number, it is before 1880, and I can only assume that the Bechstein number might date it to 1865, which is a useful addition to my Schwander list.
