Aucher Freres Model No 1 - Looking for info

Post by Ossie »

Hi, I've owned an old Aucher Freres Model No 1 Piano, Serial #17154, for many years and always wondered how old it was and where it may have come from originally. It's complete but being wooden frame won't stay in tune for very long. It has various identification marks on it including:

- Number 4434 at the top of tuning board near the centre
- Number 679R5XX at the top left of the tuning board
- Sales plate on the keyboard showing "M.Brash & Co, 108 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne"

If anyone has any history on this model please let me know. I was told it was a school Piano in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia for many years.

I've attached some photos below that may help identify it.

Thanks, Ossie

Aucher Freres Model No 1

Unfortunately, this is another instance of the published serial number dates being incorrect. They would suggest a date of about 1860, but this piano is probably nearer to 1885. Have a look at my Datemarks page at pianogen.org

There are a number of Auicher pianos on the internet, wrongly dated for this reason.

If you find old references or links on this site to pianogen.org, they should refer to pianohistory.info

Thanks Bill but not sure what you mean by "published serial number dates being incorrect"? I tried to look at your Datemarks page but it is displaying a "Page Not Found" error when I click the DATEMARKS hyperlink on your home page. Can you send the correct link to it?
