J & J Hopkinson piano

Post by Peter Hansson »

I have a J & J Hopkinson upright piano which was bought here in Sweden in about 1956, used at the time. It's a beautiful piano in red mahogany and has the number 73953. Does anybody know how old this piano is and if it has any value in spite of the trend of falling values on pianos.

The number beginning with a letter P is probably the retailers' stock number preceded by their initial, or it may mean "piano" if they sold other goods. 74062 suggests that the piano was made in 1922, without photos I have no idea if this is likely. Have a look at pianogen.org

I you want matching candlesticks you might have to buy a fresh pair and remove the one that is still on the piano. I doubt you'll be able to find a match

And a decent pair of sconces (candle-holders) may cost you more than a 1922 Hopkinson!

Hi Bill, I sent you an e-mail but didn't include the number of the Hopkinson Piano 39376, made in London, it's black and quite ornate. Can you help with a date please? Simon

You did include the number, although you got the name wrong! The published dates of Hopkinsons' number would suggest that #39376 was made in 1880, but there are several problems with the publised dates, and it just happens that we have evidence that #26917 was sent out from the factory in 1880, so #39376 is probably a little later. Any further clues will be hidden inside, so have a look at pianogen.org

Haha, quite right.
Would be cheaper to buy an old scrapper piano that has 2 sconces, reclaim the sconces and turn the piano into a lovely drinks cabinet. Everyone loves those right? I'm being sarcastic with that last part, sorry ;)

Nothing wrong with a bit of humour, the problem arises when people read it in the wrong tone of voice! Fortunately, you and I have smiley faces next to our entries, to try to convince people that we are not being grumpy!
