William Sherratt

Post by whiskeyrem »

Good Afternoon,
We have a piano labelled "Made expressly for William Sherratt, sole agent for Stoke upon Trent". The serial number is 420. Can you tell me about it. It is the most beautiful piano I have ever seen.

Re: Is this special?

Is that Skerratt? Between 1825 and 1936, there were several London piano firms named Skerratt, but "made expressly" is just a way of implying something special about a piano that is sold by a dealer. There should be another name there, either Sherratt made it for someone, or someone made it for Sherratt?

Equally, either Sherratt was the sole Stoke agent for somebody, or somebody was the sole agent for selling Sherratt pianos in Stoke.

Serial numbers don't help, and without photos we know nothing about the piano, but there may be clues inside, so have a look at pianogen.org
