Tuning - how soon after moving house?

Post by Seabagg »

I moved house a couple of weeks ago and I'm itching to get my upright piano tuned, particularly as the sustain pedal needs some attention (it has stopped working). But I've heard that it's advisable to wait a while for the instrument to 'settle'. Is this true or urban myth? If true, how long should I wait?

Yes, pianos need a little time to adjust to their new surroundings, around 2 weeks - temperature/ humidity to settle in. Your piano should be fine now for it to be tuned. Its a common thing for the sustain pedal rod to dislocate itself on removal and stop working - particularly if the piano had to be up-ended to get it around a corner, or other reasons - a 2 min job for a tuner to put right.

I'd get on the phone as soon as you can!
