Hi,

I'm not a fan. All the Challen's I've tried (admittedly not very many) have been dull in tone & heavy in the action. Not satisfying at all. Given a choice, I'd take Yamaha every time.

What are people's views on an older Challen, say around 1920-1930's baby grand (yes it is the one on eBay I'm asking about...)

The base can be a bit tubby also it may have the simplex action which is a single escarpment but at 500 should be a good buy if the tuning pins are Ok and the action is not played to death

But I would still get a tuner to look at it

Thanks for your comments Barry; 'scuse my ignorance but what do you mean by 'simplex'? Is this to do with the 'repetition' thing? I'm interested in developing some skill at 'servicing' (for want of a better word) pianos and I intend to pull out the action of whatever piano I buy and 'learn by doing'. Therefore I'm looking for a piano with a modern action. Presently, I do a lot of repair and service work on vintage organs - particularly tonewheel Hammonds - and the first thing I did when I started that was to get a really representative organ to use as a reference. The Challen's tone is not completely irrelevant - I'm going to play it as well (!) - but I'm most interested in the quality of the action and the tuneability of the instrument.

the first photo is an upright action the second is the simplex or spring and loop action the third is the roller action double escarpment

The simplex action is the more modem one but it was made as a cheep alterative to the roller double escarpment action
