samick versus j.reid

Post by molly1 »

i don't play the piano myself, but my husband can and i want my three children to learn. i have been offered two pianos for free. One is a j.reid that is 30 years old and is pretty much in tune. the other is a 20 year old samick that is quite out of tune (it hasn't been played for years and has been moved upstairs). is there much of a difference in quality between the two? i'm tempted to go for the j.reid as it is downstairs and is in tune.

If its the same size its the same piano ie a samick. J reid is the uk importer who put their name on it to make it a bit more saleable. I would get both checked out by a reputable tuner first. I usualy get asked my opinion of a piano AFTER ive moved it to a new customers home. Bit late then as the move bill is the same if its fine or firewood!!!

thanks, if it's the same make would it be the same quality or does one manufacturer make pianos aimed at different price ranges of varying quality? you can tell i know nothing about pianos! i used to want to learn as a child, but we didn't have a piano so i couldn't.

As far as I know its the same piano just some have the Samick mand and some the J reid name. Give Reids in tottenham a ring and they will be able to answer a questions you have.

thanks for your help, i rang j reid and spoke to a removal man and a piano tuner. there isn't a great deal of difference in removal costs even though the piano is upstairs, but this piano would cost a lot more to tune as it hasn't been tuned for years so will need more visits. so i'm going to go for my in-laws one which is downstairs and in tune!
