H. P. Nelson piano

Post by Dennis »

I have a H. P. Nelson upright concert grand piano. According to the stickers and other marking, it was made by the H.P. Nelson company in Chicago. I think it might have been made around the turn of the 20th century. It has a number stamped on it in several places. The number is 14622. Can anyone help me find out more about this piano?

The published serial numbers for Nelson are a mess! They are out of sequence, and seem to have extra figures in some, and digits missing in others, so I can't begin to guess!

My piano

Post by Dennis »

I have been able to get a little more information on my H.P. Nelson. The H.P. Nelson company was started in 1908 and they started their serial numbers at 6000 so mine was probably made around 1915. I have had a piano tuner/rebuilder come and look at it and he is helping me rebuild it. All new strings, new string tighteners, new hammers, all new felt, and repairing some minor cracks in the soundboard. So far it is going real good.

It's true they started in 1908, but I don't see how you arrive at 1915 when their numbers were around 76 thousand?

I also have an upright HP Nelson #8426, and just started doing some research on it. If you find a site, I would appreciate any info you can give. Thanks

The errors in the published numbers defy logic!

The number would point to c1908 However, as Bill has pointed out their numbers are odd starting at 60000 looking at their numbers they seem to make around 2500 pianos a year which seem a lot in their first year

I realize that it defies logic after reading the messages, but when I look at the sound board, there is an oval with the numbers 8426. I tried to see if there was another number preceding it, but that is the only four numbers I see. Am I looking in the wrong place? It also states; Chicago USA, Special patent brass flange quadruple repeating action, and Concert Grand.

These dates are wrong, because if the year of an exhibition is mentioned on a piano, then the piano must have been made after the exhibition, as you can read at
