Woodworm in Piano

Post by Mart »

HI I have recently discovered that my piano has wordworm. it is an old piano ?age. I was planing to get rid of it but just informed you can treat the woodworm. I would appreciate any advice, I don't want to risk the wordworm affecting the house. It was bought second hand. only for use of child starting piano lessons. Hopefully someone can help.

The holes you see are only where the worm has come out so it could have happened yesterday or 50 years ago. Is there a nice white pile of dust under the hole? Does the hole look clean and new or old and dirty? New clean wood dust means recent. You can get worm killer but I would use nitrile gloves ( green ones) , a face masks and goggles as you spray in one hole and it comes out who knows where. They may have improved the killer but in the past it was nasty stuff and not good for your health. Or and this is probably a safer bet , burn it and buy a better problem free piano from a decent piano shop. Good pianos are soo cheap its not worth bothering with junk that might end up eating your home!!!

Same as above :)
You have to be very thorough when applying the stuff, taking keys etc out. I would only do it if you have a small problem area, it too large then scrap it.

I remember once years ago i was called out to a job with "keys sticking down". When I got there the centre 2/3rds of the keyboard been so badly eaten at the balance pin that when pressed the keys broke / crumbled and stayed down at the front. In 25 odd years in the trade ive never seen anything eaten as badly as that piano was.
