WELMAR upright piano, pre 1925
Hi there,
I've just received an inheritance piano and I don't have any history on it.
It was bought by my Grandmother in South Africa in the early 1990s as a second hand piano so I've never really known the history.
I've located the serial number which is:
9632
The only other information about it is that written inside is:
"Wagner"
Can anyone please shed some light on the history of this piano please?
It has 2 pedals and is an upright piano.
Thanks,
Julie

Two pedals is the normal arrangement. Which is the right name? Do both names appear on it? And how do you know it is pre-1925? I believe Welmar is a much more modern name. Serial numbers do not help with Wagner, there were at least 9 different makes using that name.

Re: WELMAR upright piano, pre 1925
I say it's pre-1925 as I've looked up the serial number against Welmar and that's what I've been able to found thus far.
Is this not right?
Wagner is just written on the inside in pen so I'm not really sure if that will have any relevance to my piano.
Thanks

My mistake, the Welmar name was in use in 1925, but it is often unwise to rely on serial numbers for dating, because most pianos have several numbers inside. Have a look at my Datemarks page at www.pianogen.org
I have no way of dating 9632 unless Whelpdale, Maxwell & Codd have any archives available still.

Hi,
Thank you for the previous replies.
I was starting to give up hope on finding any information on my piano when I came across a stamp on the iron frame inside.
It says "H M 2"
Does this mean anything to you?
Thanks,
Julie
