Peter Clouston Grant, Edinburgh

Post by mmercurio »

I have recently acquired a beautiful piano. And I've looked online for the history, etc. of the piano - but so far, I've turned up with nothing. The information beneath the cover is as follows: P.C. GRANT - Pianoforte. Harmonium, American Organ and Music Warehouse - 53. George Street. EDINBURGH. Check Action METAL FRAME full trichord. I've attached a photo of the piano.
I appreciate any information anyone could provide!

Thank you!
Michael

Peter Clouston Grant, Edinburgh

Post by Bill Kibby »

Peter Clouston Grant was a music seller and piano dealer in Edinburgh from at least 1844 to 1872, according to his great-great-great niece, but he disappears from our Edinburgh lists by 1886. However, your piano is much later, probably late 1890s, so I will see what I can find on card and paper files. Grant is not thought to have made the pianos, he will have bought them in from anonymous wholesalers, and put his name on them. Any other clues will be hidden inside. Ask your tuner if you are not confident about taking it apart.

See also the reference to Grant in the Micklefield postings.

Hello Bill,

Here is the information I found inside the top cover: On the top middle of the metal frame for the strings (M.T.A.) - On the right side burned into the wood is the following label (P.C. Grant Edinburgh 9145 Provincal Music Traders 983 Association) - And finally a sticker a few inches away (no. 9145 Peter Crouston Grant 1362). I hope this helps!

Thanks!
Michael

Grant is not in our 1886 list, but appears again by 1894, although by 1899 we have, instead, Adam Grant of Hawick, N.B. (N.B. is "North Britain", an old term for Scotland.) This suggests that the piano was made before 1899.

Thanks Bill - I'll anxiously keep my eyes peeled if you happen to discover any more information on this piano and the maker.

Sincerely,

If you wold like to email photos of the whole piano and interior, I may be able to tell you more, but it is unlikely I can identify the name 0f the maker.
