Smith and Son of Bristol

Post by Mendipmusic »

Hi,
I have acquired a Piano which I am very interested to find out the age and any history. It is a "Smith and Son of Bristol". It has a Brass Plate with "Mickleburgh" next to the keys. I am sure this is the Dealer in Bristol. It is finished in Mahogony Veneer, Carving on the front and two Candle Stick holders. I live in Bristol so I am interested in its local history.

In 1872, Wright's Bristol & Clifton Directory lists Pianoforte Makers, including P.J. Smith & Sons, Park Row: Also listed as Pianoforte Tuners. He was still there in 1886, but gone by 1894.

I believe Mickleburghs are still on the net.

Hi Bill,
Thankyou very much. Mickleburgh are still Dealing in Bristol. There is a Number Stamped on the inside frame work, I don't have it with me now- but would it be possible to trace the history of an individual Piano or am I asking too much!! ;-).
Thanks again- Neil

Sadly, no dates of numbers are available for Smith's pianos, we don't even know if he made them Hardly any pianos can be traced individually. Have a look at my Archives page and Datemarks page.

Hi,
Not yet- I was hoping to get a rough history first and maybe aprox dates so I have a bit more information to give to them. I will drop them a mail and see what comes of it. Thankyou for your help. If anything of interest comes from it I will post the details.
Thanks again Neil...Need to learn how to play it now!!
