This appears to be yet another german-sounding alias applied to a London piano. Examples from around 1900 to 1925 are definitely London-made pianos. Their numbers were around 5500 in 1900. See

Serial Number

Post by bernie »

Hi have searched for a seriel number on my piano and I found 3 numbers the first one was embedded in the middle of the iron frame this number was MB11. The second was on the wood which was 58277 and a D which looked back to front. The Third was on the frame at the bottom which was 032-4. Would any of these numbers suggest the age of my Piano Carl Strauffe & Co
Many thanks

No dates of serial numbers are available for any of the different spellings you have mentioned.

There are plenty around, but they are getting old, and some are untuneable now. They appear to be London pianos with German actions. Have a look at

The name is likely to be "Strauss", rather than "Strauff". Strauss is a pretty common German name and, in old German script, an "s" does look like an "f".

Hi guys,

i am thinking of getting a Carl Strauss Berlin. From all the posts above (or below?), I am not sure if this meant the piano was actually made in Germany?

Also, has anyone played it or heard the sound of this piano. I wonder what it is like after fully restored.

Thanks.

The ones I have seen were cheap London-style pianos of about a century ago, with German actions. Tone and touch are a matter of personal taste, these are not to my taste.
