Gramer of Boston
Hi,
Can you tell me anything about my Piano?
I have just purchased an old Piano. Inside is the name Joseph Gramer with the number 9953.
On the front are the words Gramer, Boston, USA.
Thanks.
Dee.

I only have serial numbers up to 1913, when it was 7500.

Thank you.
Thats interesting. I wonder why you don't have later date serial numbers? I presume that the Piano was made after 1913.
In my research I have found Joseph Gramer listed on the Boston 1880 census as a Piano worker aged 45. Surely in 1913 (at 75) he would be retired or may have passed away. I noted his son Edward (20) in the same census was also making Piano's. Would he inscribe his Fathers name without adding '& son'? Do you have anyput on this? Could you direct me to other sites where I might be able to find out more information and develope this exciting paper chase that I have embarked on?
Much obliged.

1913 is the latest serial number that was published, I have no knowledge of the firm other than what is in books. Very few american pianos make it across the ocean. I would love to find an american equivalent of the service I offer on UK firms, but there doesn't seem to be one anywhere, that's why I receive so many enquiries from the States, Canada, Australia, etc.. It may well have been a son, descendant or someone who bought up the name by 1913.
