Piano / Music Competition c.1900
Good morning all, I am new to this site - just found it and was hoping that someone can help with some INFO.
Do you know of a Piano or Music Competition c.1900 in London. Looking for info on my g.mother Ethel Margaret Minshull. She travelled from Liverpool to London about 1900 to play in a Music Competition, bit like Musician of the year, to play the Piano. She was born in 1884 in Flint but represented Liverpool in the Competition, Many thanks, Cheryl

I wouldn't know where to begin. It sounds like some sort of competitive music festival. Did your grandmother go on to study music? What else do you know about her?
If it is a competitive music festival, the chances are that the competition is still held but perhaps under a different name, and perhaps there are still records in the form of the concert programmes from the festival? Maybe there are newspaper clippings about your grandmother in a library somewhere if she won the competition or got a special mention? It is a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack I know, but you never know what you might find out. Enjoy the search!

Your confidence in me is flattering Barrie, but my area is pianos, rather than music. However, something may turn up one day. We have many items of paperwork which have not been fully explored yet, because our unique project has been unable to obtain funding.

I would recommend for a start spending an afternoon in your nearest City library going through the music periodicals of the time. No idea which ones or even what they would be, but the archivist should be able to help.

The Musical Review and the Music Times would be a good place to start.
I play for my own amazement...
